When you think of a doula, you might imagine a woman who helps the mother during labor and birth. But that is only part of our role! Did you know a doula can also be a great support for the dad? A doula is a trained professional who provides non-medical, emotional, physical, and spiritual support to the birthing family. She is not replacing the dad. She is giving him the tools to truly engage in and enhance the birth of his child! Now that’s a dad and doula dynamic duo!
Building Dad’s Confidence in Birth
Lot of husbands go to childbirth classes. All that information can be a lot to process. A doula can help fill the gaps about the normal physiological process of birth. She knows the different options and choices available, and the benefits and risks of each intervention. She can refresh that info during prenatal visits. Most importantly, she will be there to remind dad of what he already knows in the labor space. He doesn’t have to remember everything! He gets to focus on his wife.
Doula Providing Practical Support
A doula can help with some of the practical aspects of preparing for the birth. Guiding the packing the hospital bag, finding the best route to the birthplace, and helping to build a great playlist. During labor, a doula helps with some of the tasks that might otherwise distract him from supporting the mother. She can easily help in getting food and drinks, taking pictures, and finding the cool washcloth at just the right moment. A doula can see to it that the dad takes care of himself, so he can better support mom.
Sharing the Load – Doula and Dad together
A doula can take turns with the dad in providing support to the mother. This gives him some space to step out if he needs a break. She can be an extra set of hand so that wonderful counter pressure doesn’t have to stop when mamma needs some water! If any unexpected situations or complications, or even just a simple question comes up, a doula can also help. She can provide him with information and guidance. A doula can help the dad communicate with the medical staff. She knows the follow up questions to ask if he is unsure or confused.
Enhancing the Bond
Encouraging the mother and the baby during labor and birth, a doula helps the dad be more involved and present in the birth process. This can enable him to feel more connected and empowered. A doula can help the dad witness and celebrate the miracle of birth. Helping him to honor the mother’s strength and courage. A doula can also help the dad welcome, and bond with the baby, and assist with the first breastfeeding and skin-to-skin contact.
A dad and doula dynamic duo can be a valuable support for birth. A doula aids the dad to be the best partner he can be. Helping to make the birth experience more positive and memorable for the whole family.
